Construction jobs added in 38 states during past 12 months

Thirty-eight states added construction jobs from March 2018 to March 2019, and 29 states added construction jobs from February to March, according to www.agc.org.

"Although construction has added jobs in many states at a higher rate than the private sector as a whole in the past year, the record number of job openings at the end of February shows contractors would add even more workers if they could," says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. "There is no sign of a let-up in the demand for construction workers."

Texas added the most construction jobs—28,300—between March 2018 and March 2019. California, Florida, Arizona and West Virginia also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, West Virginia added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by Nevada, Wyoming, Alaska and Arizona.

Twenty-nine states added construction jobs from February to March, with Washington adding the most construction jobs—14,800—followed by California, Texas, Florida, Minnesota and New York. Washington also added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month.

Eleven states and Washington, D.C., lost construction jobs between March 2018 and March 2019. Louisiana lost the highest number of construction jobs—7,900—followed by Illinois, South Carolina and Missouri. Construction employment fell in 18 states and Washington, D.C., from February to March, and Pennsylvania lost more than any other state—1,800.
