Forty states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from July 2018 to July 2019, and 25 states added construction jobs from June to July, according to www.agc.org.
“Demand for projects, and the workers to build them, shows no sign of letting up in most states, and contractors continue to increase headcount when they can find qualified workers,” says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. “But job openings at the end of June were the highest ever for June, suggesting that contractors are struggling to find all the workers they need in many states.”
Texas added the most construction jobs—48,400—between July 2018 and July 2019. California, Florida and Arizona also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, Wyoming added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by West Virginia, North Dakota and Arizona.
Texas added the most construction jobs from June to July—6,300—followed by Utah, Washington, Virginia and Minnesota. Utah added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month.
Ten states lost construction jobs between July 2018 and July 2019. Louisiana lost the highest number of construction jobs—12,100—followed by Ohio, South Carolina and Massachusetts. Construction employment fell in 22 states from June to July, and Ohio lost more than any other state—1,900.
