Construction jobs added in 43 states and Washington, D.C., during past 12 months

Forty-three states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from December 2017 to December 2018, and 26 states added construction jobs from November 2018 to December 2018, according to www.agc.org.

"The construction industry ended 2018 in good shape in nearly all parts of the country, and contractors are optimistic about the volume of work available in 2019," says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). "But finding workers to execute those projects is likely to be a major challenge."

Texas added the most construction jobs—46,800—between December 2017 and December 2018. Florida, California, Georgia and Arizona also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, Connecticut added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, North Dakota and Georgia.

Twenty-six states added construction jobs from November 2018 to December 2018, with Florida adding the most construction jobs—6,100—followed by Texas, Indiana and Georgia. South Dakota added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month.

Six states lost construction jobs between December 2017 and December 2018. South Carolina lost the highest number of construction jobs—5,100—followed by Hawaii and Missouri. Construction employment fell in 11 states from November 2018 to December 2018, and Iowa lost more than any other state—1,900.
