NRCA member roofing contractor will help install roof on needy church

NRCA member K. Simon Construction Inc., Naples, Fla., will be donating labor to help install a roof system on a church in Lehigh, Fla. The company will facilitate the project, which also includes donated shingles from NRCA member CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., and donated accessories from SRS Distribution Inc., McKinney, Texas.

Several of K. Simon Construction's project managers live in Lehigh and pass 1st Community Congregational Church daily, noticing the building needed a new roof. The church has a food center that provides food for the homeless two or three days per week. A project manager stopped one day and talked to the pastor, Rev. Deborah Frysinger, who was serving food through the church's Helping Hands Ministry. She said many roofing companies have stopped, but after learning the church didn't have insurance, they never came back.

The project manager was moved by the situation and by what the church does for the community. He discussed it with his manager, who brought it to the attention of company owner Kelly Simon. Simon said, "You organize it, and I'll make it happen."

Staff contacted the pastor, and the church accepted the company's offer to install a roof system on the church. The company has asked the community and other businesses for help and has received a good response. K. Simon Construction hopes to not only get the church completed but to help the food center and other members of the church and community struggling after Hurricane Irma.

"We serve nearly 150,000 people per year in our food ministry and have done so for several years," Frysinger says. "If we were unable to get the roof repaired, the ministry would close as any appreciable amount of rain would add additional damage to the interior of the church. We would have to shut down this critically important mission and all those people would suffer."

K. Simon Construction currently is in the stages of organizing the project.
