HOUCK SERVICES INC. WINS GOLD CIRCLE AWARD

Las Vegas—During the National Roofing Contractors Association's (NRCA's) 119th Annual Convention held Feb. 13-16, Houck Services Inc., Harrisburg, Pa., won NRCA's Gold Circle Award for safety solutions and was a finalist for outstanding workmanship: steep-slope.

Houck Services earned the award for replacing the existing roof system on the 14-story Scarlett Place Condominiums in Baltimore. The scope of work included replacing the 29,000 square feet (2694 m²) of 6-in-12 (27-degree) sloped metal roofing panels and plywood substrate that encompassed 18 levels. CENTRIA's mechanically seamed SDP 200 panel was specified. The company also replaced three small low-slope roofs with a Sarnafil G410 white felt-backed membrane. Safety was a priority-harnesses and safety lines were used by all crew members, and covered walkthrough scaffolding was staged at various locations on the ground. The city dust added a challenge because it made the panels slippery; all small tools and equipment were tethered to the roof. Mechanics maintained federal and state safety standards and also adhered to a stringent Houck Services safety program.

The Gold Circle Awards program annually honors NRCA members and affiliate organizations from around the world. Recipients are recognized by their peers for significant contributions to the roofing industry in one of five categories: workmanship, innovation, service to the community, service to the industry and safety.
