THE NATIONAL ROOFING CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION JOINS SAFETY COMMITTEE Rosemont, Ill.—Tom Shanahan, the National Roofing Contractors Association's (NRCA's) associate executive director of education and risk management, has been invited by the Secretary of Labor to serve as a member of the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH) representing employer interests. This appointment, which became effective Nov. 30, 2007, is for a two-year period and may continue until a successor has been appointed. Shanahan is a recognized expert on issues pertaining to construction industry safety and health. As NRCA's associate executive director of education and risk management, his responsibilities include monitoring and developing programs and educating members about health, insurance, regulatory and legal issues affecting the roofing industry. He also is responsible for the development, execution and delivery of numerous other technical and management-related safety and health educational programs, conferences, videos and supporting materials. He acts as a roofing industry liaison to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation, American National Standards Institute, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and National Safety Council. ACCSH was established under the Construction Work Hours and Safety Standards Act to advise the U.S. secretary of labor on policy matters and the formulation of construction standards and regulations. The U.S. Department of Labor's assistant secretary for OSHA also consults with ACCSH when OSHA recommends standards for construction activities. Advisory committee members are chosen based on their occupational safety and health knowledge, experience and affiliation with the construction industry. "Falls from elevations, especially among roofing employees, continue to be the No. 1 cause of fatalities in the construction industry," says Michael G. Connors, an OSHA regional administrator, "NRCA's role on the ACCSH committee will provide the viewpoints of the represented employers and of other OSHA stakeholders necessary to eliminate these fall hazards." Established in 1886, NRCA is one of the construction industry's oldest trade associations and the voice of professional roofing contractors worldwide. The association has 4,600 members from all 50 states and 54 countries and is affiliated with 105 local, state, regional and international roofing contractor associations. ###
