Tom Shanahan—Strategic planning

Tom Shanahan, CAE, joined the NRCA staff in 1989. He attended Creighton University graduating with a degree in business management. Tom also holds an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. Prior to joining NRCA, he worked in the hotel industry for 11 years where his responsibilities included safety, loss control and departmental management.

At NRCA, Tom's responsibilities include overseeing the education and risk management department, which is responsible for several committees that address the education, health, safety and insurance issues affecting the roofing industry.

Tom is recognized for his contributions to NRCA's Professional Roofing magazine, production of safety programs and knowledge of safety-related regulations. He is a regular speaker at roofing industry events covering safety and health issues, as well as communication, management and training skills.

Tom is an active member of the American National Standard Institute (ANSI), serving on the A10 Committee on Safety in Construction and Demolition Operations; the A10.32 Committee on Fall Protection; and the A10.38 Committee on Safety Program Elements. He has acted as vice chairman of the A10.23 Back Injury Prevention and the A10.24 Roofing subcommittees.

Tom is active in regulatory actions affecting the roofing industry, working with officials from the Department of Transportation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). In fact, OSHA and NIOSH have invited Tom to serve on a number of task forces, such as fall protection, scaffolds, residential safety, asphalt fumes and general roofing safety.
