Forum addresses effects of health care law on small businesses
On July 26, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce partnered with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and American Action Forum (AAF) to host "Behind the Curtain: The Health Care Law's Impact on Small Business." The forum featured Washington experts and opinion leaders, as well as entrepreneurs who run small businesses and create jobs. Some highlights included:
- Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), who recently introduced S. 3758, the "Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act," which protects small-business owners from the financial burden of filing the many 1099 forms the health care law requires
- Scott Womack, an IHOP franchisee who has created hundreds of jobs. Womack has crunched the numbers and has serious concerns about the effects the new health care law will have on his company.
- Doug Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum. In the past, he was director of the Congressional Budget Office, Washington's top budget prognosticator and served as chief economist on the President's Council of Economic Advisors. He released a new white paper discussing the effects the new health care law will have on small businesses.
- An expert panel of trade association policy staff, who discussed important provisions in the new health care law, and an entrepreneur panel of small-business owners, who discussed how the new law is affecting their businesses
