NRCA clarifies BIPV article

The NRCA SmartBrief published Aug. 12 included a link to "Built-in solar struggles with costs, efficiency," an article written by the Reuters news service that does not reflect the opinions of NRCA.

In fact, the article included some glaring errors, most notably the statement that "BIPV systems are limited mostly to roofing tiles." BIPV systems are not just limited to roofing, and roofing-related BIPV is not exclusively found in tiles. The article also suggests BIPV products are not as efficient as some photovoltaic panels, which simply is not the case; in fact, efficiency in many BIPV products has improved dramatically and is projected by many to improve even more quickly in the near future as new technologies emerge. The article also fails to mention the entire nonutility scale solar industry has seen demand fall—not just the BIPV segment.
