NRCA joins high performance building group

NRCA has joined the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus (HPBCC) Coalition, which is hosting its first annual Virtual Congressional Visits Day June 15-19. The Virtual Congressional Visits Day provides an opportunity for NRCA members to call, write and/or e-mail members of Congress regarding two items: urging support of the Green Roofing Energy Efficiency Tax Act (GREETA) and urging members of Congress to join HPBCC.

HPBCC consists of members of the House of Representatives who want to improve energy efficiency and other aspects of high-performance buildings. A high-performance building is defined in the Energy Policy and Security Act of 2007 as "a building that integrates and optimizes on a life cycle basis all major high performance attributes, including energy conservation, environment, safety, security, durability, accessibility, cost-benefit, productivity, sustainability, functionality, and operational considerations."

The HPBCC Coalition comprises private sector organizations, such as NRCA, that work closely with the Congressional members of HPBCC regarding energy efficiency and related issues that affect commercial and residential buildings and the construction industry. HPBCC helps facilitate Congressional consideration of legislation such as GREETA.

During the week of June 15-19, NRCA members are encouraged to contact their House representatives and urge them to do the following:

1) Co-sponsor GREETA (H.R. 426), which is legislation to reduce the depreciation schedule from 39 to 20 years for commercial roof systems that meet a benchmark energy-efficiency standard. By accelerating demand for energy-efficient commercial roof systems, GREETA will create 40,000 new jobs among contractors and manufacturers; reduce U.S. energy consumption by 13.3 million kilowatt-hours annually; and reduce carbon emissions by 20 million pounds per year. A position paper with more information regarding GREETA can be found on NRCA's Web site by clicking here.

2) Join HPBCC to build support for sensible energy. For more information about HPBCC, visit hpbccc.org. For more information about the Virtual Congressional Visits Day, visit hpbccc.org/CVD.php.

To contact your representative, call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and ask for your representative by name, or, contact your representatives by e-mail; e-mail addresses can be found at www.house.gov.

For more information or to let NRCA know you have contacted your representative, please contact Duane Musser, NRCA's vice president of government relations at (800) 338-5765 or dmusser@nrca.net.
