The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress is pleased to announce the creation of the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program, a new permanent program that will replace the current scholarship program beginning with the 2009-10 academic year. The program will provide significant scholarships to individuals.
The scholarship awards support attendance at accredited university or vocational programs.
The eligibility requirements are being developed.
To date, the Alliance Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $130,000 in scholarships to 46 students.
Melvin Kruger, CEO of L.E. Schwartz & Son, Inc., Macon, Ga., is a former NRCA president, served as a member of the Georgia Education Commission and was a driving force in the creation of the Roofing Industry Educational Institute in 1979. He also was the principal fundraiser at the time the Alliance was established.
The program's goal is to secure pledges for the new program so commitments will total $2 million by April 2008.
To date, the Alliance allocated $400,000 from previously collected scholarship contributions to the new fund and committed an additional $250,000 during the next five years. The Alliance also agreed to contribute $25,000 per year thereafter, money that will go directly to providing scholarships.
Scholarship awards
The Alliance Scholarship Committee will develop eligibility requirements. Generally, scholarship awards will be made in the amount of $5,000 each and may be renewed annually, provided winners continue to meet award criteria.
After the program is fully funded, the goal is that twenty-five $5,000 scholarships can be awarded each year.

A personal legacy
Your gift of $25,000 over five years will support scholarship, help the Alliance reach its goal and honor Melvin for all his work.
You can make your mark on the future of the roofing industry through a named scholarship fund. Your fund can be established in your name (or your company's name). Those who commit a minimum of $100,000 to the new fund can choose to name a scholarship and participate in the selection of the recipient each year.
In addition, through a planned gift, you can endow your annual support and perpetuate your values well beyond your own lifetime.
Be recognized . . .
Your gifts to the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program will be recognized on the Alliance Web site, in its newsletter and at NRCA's annual convention.
