NRCA's ANSI/SPRI ES-1 testing and certification listing of shop-fabricated edge metal
The 2003, 2006 and 2009 editions of the
International Building Code (IBC) and some
other building codes contain provisions requiring edge-metal flashings (copings,
fascia, gravel stop), except gutters, to be designed and installed in accordance
with ANSI/SPRI ES-1, "American National Standard for Edge Systems Used with Low
Slope Roof Systems." For example, in the
International Building Code, 2006 Edition,
this provision reads as follows:
1504.5 Edge securement for low-slope roofs. Low-slope membrane roof system
metal edge securement, except gutters, shall be designed and installed for wind
loads in accordance with Chapter 16 and tested for resistance in accordance with
ANSI/SPRI ES-1, except the basic wind speed shall be determined from Figure 1609.

Also, some project specifications contain provisions requiring edge-metal flashings
comply with ANSI/SPRI ES-1.
To assist roofing professionals in complying with these provisions, NRCA has performed
laboratory testing and maintains a certification listing based upon ANSI/SPRI ES-1
with Intertek Testing Services, N.A. (ITS), for specific edge-metal flashings that
are included in the construction details section of T
he NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing
Manual, Fifth Edition.

that have been tested and are included in the certification listing.
NRCA has performed this testing and maintains this certification listing to provide
roofing professionals with the necessary design-resistance load data to use in conjunction
with ANSI/SPRI ES-1 to comply with the building codes' provisions and project specification
requirements.
Also, NRCA had made arrangements with ITS to allow specific NRCA members to be included
in NRCA's ITS certification listing as authorized fabricators (also referred to
as "additional manufacturers"). This designation signifies that the specific NRCA
member companies have submitted to and successfully completed third-party verification
of compliance with NRCA's certification listing. These companies are allowed to
use ITS product certification mark labels on the specific edge-metal flashing products
that comply with NRCA's certification listing.

fabricators.
