Michal Bartko, Ph.D., research director, joined the NRCA staff in 2008. He holds
a master's degree in architecture and building construction from the Slovak University
of Technology and a doctorate in environmental science and technology from the Tokyo
Institute of Technology. Before joining NRCA, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher
at The University of Tokyo's Department of the Environment.
Bartko is responsible for helping to develop NRCA documents related to sustainability,
tracking the photovoltaic industry as it relates to roof systems, and identifying
and tracking research related to vegetative roof systems and photovoltaic roof systems.
He is a member of NRCA's Renewable Energy Task Force and a liaison to the Center
for Environmental Innovation in Roofing's Research Committee. Bartko also is a member
of the ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing and ASTM International
Committee E60 on Sustainability.
