NRCA continues to become more involved with environmental aspects of the roofing industry.

During the 2007-08 year, 58 roofing contractors were awarded certificates of completion for the SpecRight Program, an NRCA initiative that provides information about conserving energy and protecting the environment through quality roof system design, installation, materials and maintenance.

In addition, The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, a separate but related educational and research organization of NRCA, partnered with Penn State University, University Park, Pa., and will contribute $100,000 to green roofing and solar energy research. Penn State University currently is conducting research to measure R-values of green roof systems; was involved with the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, a project that incorporates solar roof system technology; has developed "4-D" project management software; and has conducted a photovoltaics study for the electrical contracting industry and nanotechnology involving photovoltaic integration.

Three initial objectives for the partnership were put forth: pursuing the Solar Decathlon to explore how building-integrated photovoltaic systems affect the roofing industry and promote the roofing industry's role regarding solar energy systems to increase visibility of the roofing industry among college graduates; contribute to the advancement of green roof system research specifically regarding energy performance by sponsoring state-of-the-art research and developing educational materials that promote green roof system awareness (Alliance funding would pay for the testing of green roof system specimens at Penn State University); and investigate the potential effects and respective market strategies for the roofing industry as interest in building-integrated photovoltaic technologies grows.

NRCA launched the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing, a separate nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization that promotes the development and use of environmentally responsible, high-performance roof systems. Located in Washington, D.C., the center endeavors to advance innovative solutions to energy and environmental challenges by coordinating and encouraging objective research; serving as a repository for environmental information; expanding market opportunities; participating in science-based advocacy; and coordinating environmental standards and codes.

NRCA also co-sponsored and participated in the Energy Efficiency Global (EE Global) Forum and Exposition Nov. 11-14 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Hosted by The Alliance to Save Energy, it is intended to demonstrate the viability of energy efficiency on a global scale. The EE Global Forum and Exposition showcases products and services specific to the energy-efficiency industry and brings together industry professionals, academics and policymakers to exchange information and provide networking opportunities.
