Cullen Research Fellowship Award
William (Bill) C. Cullen had an illustrious professional career and was an admired
colleague and valued friend to the roofing industry.
Cullen began his career in the roofing industry in 1947 at the National Bureau of
Standards (NBS), now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST),
from which he retired in 1981 after 34 years of service. In his years at NBS, he
was a project leader for numerous studies concerning the performance of roof and
waterproofing systems. In his later years at NBS, Cullen served in various administrative
capacities, including chief of the materials durability and analysis section; assistant
chief of the structures, materials and life safety division; and upon his retirement,
deputy director of the Office of Engineering Standards. Throughout his NBS career,
he served as a consulting and advisory member of technical committees for many roofing
industry organizations, including NRCA.
Upon his retirement from NBS, Cullen joined NRCA as a research associate. In this
position, he provided consultation on various research and technology projects,
wrote and presented papers at conferences and symposia, and acted as a worldwide
ambassador for the U.S. roofing industry.
Cullen passed away on November 5, 1997.
William C. Cullen Research Fellowship Award
In lasting recognition of Bill Cullen's legacy to the roofing industry, the National
Roofing Foundation (NRF) established the William C. Cullen Research Fellowship Award.
The fellowship annually will award a cash grant to an individual researcher or research
organization to support research relating specifically to the advancement of roofing
technology.
A broad range of projects will be considered.
The Fellowship Award is open to any individual or organization interested in the
advancement of roofing technology. Winners are eligible to apply again in subsequent
years.
The award will be presented at the annual installation dinner held during NRCA's
Midyear Meetings in Chicago. Note: The recipient will be reimbursed for travel and
lodging expenses related to the award presentation. The recipient also will receive
a recognition plaque.
