Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Center (Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing) is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(6) organization that serves as a forum to draw together the entire roofing industry into the common cause of promoting the knowledge base, development and use of environmentally responsible, high-performance roof systems.

The Excellence in Design award was established by NRCA in 2003 to recognize those who design long-lasting, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly roof systems according to accepted industry practices. In 2005, NRCA launched SpecRight, a program geared toward educating contractors, designers and building owners about energy-efficient and environmentally friendly roof systems. And in 2006, the award was renamed the SpecRight Excellence in Design Award to reflect better the goals of the educational program and the spirit of the award. As of 2008, SpecRight and the Excellence in Design Award have been integrated in to the Center.

All NRCA and the Center members are encouraged to apply for the 2009 Excellence in Design Award. To be considered, roof systems must have been designed and installed after Jan. 1, 2006, and an organization must complete an application by Nov. 21. Winner will be recognized at a ceremony at NRCA's 122nd Annual Convention, Feb. 1 - 5, 2009, in Las Vegas, and will receive a $2,500 cash prize, publicity during the convention and acknowledgement in Professional Roofing magazine and on the Center's Web site (www.RoofingCenter.org) and SpecRight's Web site (www.specright.net).
