2004 winner
Magco Inc., Jessup, Md., won NRCA's 2004 Excellence in Design Award competition
for the Renaissance Center, South River Colony, Md.
The Renaissance Center houses the headquarters of The Brick Cos. and Atlantic Golf.
During the design phase of the building, the owner stressed he wanted an environmentally
responsible building that would feature a green roof system. Although the plot of
land designated for the building had a storm-water management system sized for a
smaller building and less impervious area, the owner decided to proceed with the
project, as well as the necessary paperwork for approval.
Magco was contracted to install a green roof system on the building and reduced
the cost by 30 percent by redesigning it and not using proprietary products. Magco
installed all the waterproofing, insulation, soil media and plantings with its work
force. The roof system consists of polyisocyanurate insulation, water-blocking seal,
heat-welded TPO membrane, drainage board, stainless-steel perforated edge, and growth
media and plants.
The company offered an overburden removal warranty and an 80 percent plant-growth
coverage warranty.
The building now features the largest privately owned, self-funded extensive green
roof system in Maryland and has convinced Anne Arundel County to promote and recommend
green roof system installation on other buildings.
