THE DURABLE SLATE CO. WINS GOLD CIRCLE AWARD
Las VegasDuring the National Roofing Contractors Association's (NRCA's) 119th
Annual Convention held Feb. 13-16, The Durable Slate Co., Columbus, Ohio, won NRCA's
Gold Circle Award for outstanding workmanship: steep-slope, as well as NRCA's Gold
Circle Award for safety solutions.
The Durable Slate Co. earned the awards for replacing the cupola of First United
Methodist Church in Lancaster, Ohio, after leaking water began to penetrate the
sanctuary below. A crown roof system above a portion of the cupola with stained-glass
windows was installed first. The windows were clad in 20-ounce copper. The wood
base was rebuilt, and the colonnade section of the cupola was fabricated in The
Durable Slate Co.'s shop while the original frame of the bell roof system was retained
and reinforced. The bell and colonnade structures were clad in copper and reassembled
on the roof system. The base of the cupola only had been toe-nailed; it was redesigned
so it could be lag-bolted to the rafters. Work on the 60-foot- (18-m-) high cupola
was complicated by the presence of an irreplaceable stained-glass window in the
ceiling of the sanctuary directly below the cupola's skylight.
The Gold Circle Awards program annually honors NRCA members and affiliate organizations
from around the world. Recipients are recognized by their peers for significant
contributions to the roofing industry in one of five categories: workmanship, innovation,
service to the community, service to the industry and safety.
