NRCA COMMITS TO REHABILITATION OF CHURCH
Rosemont, Ill.The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) has committed
$50,000 to the rehabilitation of the roof on the Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist
Church in New Orleans, which was damaged severely by Hurricane Rita and has no insurance
to help pay for repairs.
NRCA member Beldon Roofing Company, San Antonio, is performing the roofing work
for the project. Beldon Roofing completed the first phase of the roof repair before
Christmas and will finish the project after structural repairs are completed by
NRCA member The Ellis Co., Kenner, La. The National Roofing Foundation (NRF), a separate but related organization
to NRCA, is reimbursing Beldon Roofing for labor costs. Bruce Fryer, chief executive
officer of NRCA member Fryer Roofing Co. Inc., Fresno, Calif., is coordinating the
project, which is expected to be finished by Feb. 3.
The Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, led by Rev. J. Nelson Brown, has
a congregation of 650. Located in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, the church
is isolated from the rest of the city by the Mississippi River. Church officials
and volunteers have been serving meals at the facility every day since the hurricanes
destroyed their community and have provided supplies, water and ice, as well.
NRF established its Disaster Relief Fund to provide new roofs in regions affected
by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and is seeking labor, monetary and material donations
to support the fund. NRF also currently is pursuing donations to replenish the materials
used for the Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church project.
For more information about how to make a donation or apply for funding, contact
Jacki Golike, NRCA's associate executive director for operations, at (847) 299-9070,
Ext. 7582, or at jgolike@nrca.net.
Donations can also be made online at www.nrca.net/member/about/charity/disaster/default.aspx.
