Instructors
NRCA is pleased to introduce the outstanding faculty for the Executive Management
Institute (EMI).
Four instructors are researchers and professors at Northwestern University's Kellogg
School of Management; one is the managing director for Axios Partners.
Kellogg is world-renowned for its excellence in business education and historically
has been ranked as one of the top business schools in the world by
BusinessWeek,
U.S. News & World Report,
Financial Times,
The Economist Intelligence Unit and other
business news outlets. Alumni from the Kellogg school hold leadership positions
in for-profit, nonprofit, governmental and academic institutions around the world.
Not only is the EMI faculty composed of Kellogg's leading researchers, professors
and practitioners, but they also are well-acquainted with the roofing industry.
For example, Karen Cates, Keith Murnighan and Tim Calkins have been NRCA Future
Executives Institute faculty since 2002, 2003 and 2005, respectively.
Two faculty members have been involved with NRCA's strategic planning process. Rich
Honack played a key role in helping NRCA develop its strategic plan in 2004. Karen
Cates has been involved in various roles at NRCA for 15 yearsfacilitating strategic
planning for NRCA, the National Roofing Legal Resource Center (NRLRC), the Roofing
Industry Alliance for Progress and NRCA University.
Axios is an organization that leads clients to innovate and manage customer value
for revenue and profit growth. Drawing on a network of expert resources, it combines
highly skilled and experienced consultants with cutting-edge methods to address
clients' challenges. Results have been highlighted in
Fortune,
Harvard Business
Review and numerous other publications. Eric Berggren, CEO, has ties to Kellogg
and NRCA. He works closely with Kellogg faculty member James Anderson, Ph.D., whose
book,
Value Merchants, published by Harvard Business School Press, includes the
section "Value Work Equations at a Commercial Roofer," drawn from his work preparing
for an NRCA course addressing customer value management. Mr. Berggren substitutes
for Dr. Anderson at Kellogg and his practice implements these same customer value
tenets, which makes him an outstanding instructor for this portion of the EMI marketing
class.
Tim Calkins will take the lead in teaching and facilitating the marketing course.
Mr. Calkins' expertise in marketing, marketing plans and, in particular, branding
has made him a regular on local and national television and radio programs, not
to mention a student and faculty favorite at Kellogg and FEI. Two outstanding professionals
will round out the marketing program. Eric Berggren will provide insightful and
practical value proposition and value quantification material every roofing contractor
should know in this tough economy. Rich Honack will open up the new world of marketing
via the use of social media. The world has gotten smaller because of information
accessibility becoming so fast and easy via the Internet. Mr. Honack will describe
and show how to best use this information vehicle to sell your services.
The leadership portion of EMI will be taught by Keith Murnighan and Karen Cates,
FEI favorites, who will address decision making, effective teams, visioning, negotiating
strategies, leadership qualities, effective people management, and leading and motivating
multiple generations. Dr. Murnighan is in internationally renowned author, professor
and lecturer on the subject of leadership decision making and risk management, especially
in social situations. Recognized for his teaching excellence, Dr. Murnighan combines
research-backed insights with down-to-earth examples of how to apply them every
day with your team. Dr. Cates splits her time between Kellogg and her own executive
coaching practice, combining theory with consulting experience in for- and not-for-profit
organizations. The result is an action-oriented approach to leadership with emphasis
on the individual and his or her strengths and motivations.
