Roofing 101 is an interactive online educational program addressing basic roofing terminology, roof assembly components and roof systems.
Roofing 101 consists of five self-paced learning modules requiring about one hour each to complete. Animation, graphics, videos and interactive learning activities combine to create a fun, effective learning experience.
Here is what you will learn in each module:
Module 1: The Basics
- Learn how the roofing industry works. Discover the roles and responsibilities of key roofing industry professionals including roof system designers, contractors, manufacturers, and building code and regulatory agents who govern roofing work.
- Learn basic roofing terminology and understand the essential functions of roof system components.
- Understand the importance of safety in the roofing industry.
- Identify the different types of low- and steep-slope roof systems.

Module 2: Roof System Basics
- Recognize safe job-site practices and the critical safety issues involving roofing workers, building tenants and the general public.
- Identify roof assembly components, including common roof deck types and their different characteristics, and understand the functions and ideal properties of insulation and vapor retarders.
- Understand the role of testing organizations FM Approvals and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Inc. and the roofing-related provisions found in model building codes.
- Explore sustainable design and energy efficiency for roof systems through thermal insulation, cool roofing technologies, green roof systems, and photovoltaic and wind-generating systems.
- Recognize general protections, conditions and exclusions of warranty coverages.
- Explain recommendations for roof inspection, maintenance and record keeping.

Module 3: Low-slope Roof Systems
- Take a closer look at design issues; general preparation and application methods; and material storage and handling for low-slope roof systems.
- Explore the different characteristics, application methods, maintenance requirements and safety concerns of these and other low-slope roof systems:
- Built-up
- Polymer-modified bitumen
- Single-ply
- Spray polyurethane foam
- Structural metal

Module 4: Steep-slope Roof Systems
- Learn about design issues, material handling, substrate preparation, insulation requirements, layout and attachment methods, ventilation issues and valley applications.
- Explore the types, styles, application methods, maintenance requirements and safety concerns of these and other steep-slope roof systems:
- Asphalt shingles
- Wood shakes and shingles
- Clay and concrete tile
- Slate
- Architectural metal

Module 5: Roof Flashings Systems and Accessories
- Identify the basic components of vertical, horizontal and metal flashing systems for low- and steep-slope flashing systems.
- Identify flashing accessories for low- and steep-slope systems.
- Describe best practices for flashing system application.
- Explore basic maintenance issues.
- Identify hazards and recommend controls for specific safety issues associated with flashing system and accessory installation.

This course will benefit people new to the roofing industry, building owners and facility managers.
