Vegetative Roof Systems

A vegetative roof system is a roof area of plantings installed above a waterproofing
membrane. As part of NRCA's Roofing, Energy and the Environment Series, this module
examines the different types of vegetative roof systems, their performance attributes,
and economic and environmental benefits. In addition, you will review:
- Structural deck design requirements for new and retrofit decks
- Materials and installation recommendations for the following vegetative roof system
components: waterproofing membrane, protection course, root barrier, drainage layer,
moisture-resistant thermal insulation, aeration layer, moisture-retention layer,
reservoir layer, filter fabric and growth medium
- Accessories used to install vegetative roof systems, including inspection boxes,
irrigation and electrical lines, overburden dividers, drain systems, metal components
and area dividers
- Care and maintenance requirements
- Specific roles and responsibilities of the vegetative roof system project team,
which includes a professional designer, materials manufacturer, waterproofing contractor
and landscape contractor
- Proper fall protection and unique installation safety hazards
Vegetative Roof Systems is a self-paced program that takes about one hour to complete.
Animation, graphics, videos and interactive learning activities combine to create
a fun, effective learning experience. Continuing-education credits are available,
and participants will receive a certificate of completion upon passing an exam.

Program notes:
NRCA RegistrationTo enroll in the Vegetative Roof Systems program, you must
register on NRCA's Web site and create a user name and password.

page.
Access periodYou will have seven days to access the program. During this time,
you must complete the program, take the required 10-question exam and obtain your
certificate of completion. The seven-day access period begins on the day you start
taking the course.
