Community Service Day was a success

On Feb. 4, the 2013 International Roofing Expo® (IRE) held Community Service Day in San Antonio. The IRE partnered with NRCA's Disaster Relief Committee and Rebuilding Together® San Antonio to host the home renovation and revitalization project.

More than 50 volunteers helped renovate the homes of Concepción and Enrique Merendon and Maria Luna. The Merendons have lived in their home for 20 years. Enrique is unemployed and disabled, needing frequent kidney dialysis treatment and suffering from permanent back injuries and nerve problems in his leg. Their home needed siding, painting and property cleanup, among other things.

Luna is a grandmother raising four of her grandchildren on her own. Volunteers rebuilt the house's front and back porch and steps, replaced the skirting, repaired the eaves and assembled a playground in the backyard for the children, among other things.

NRCA and Sika/Sarnafil, Canton, Mass., were among the companies and organizations involved in Community Service Day. Sika/Sarnafil was the sponsor for the day and provided materials, and NRCA volunteers provided the labor. Additionally, Benco Commercial Roofing, Fort Worth, Texas, donated a roof for the Merendon home.

"We had a record turnout for this year's Community Service Day, with 55 people working on two homes in dire need of repair," says Bill Good, NRCA's executive vice president. "Renovations included exterior painting of both houses, and one homeowner also got a fantastic new playground for the four grandchildren she raises. All in all, it was a terrific day. We owe special thanks to our friends at Sika/Sarnafil for sponsoring the day; we literally could not have done this without them."
