Homeowners receive tax credits for asphalt shingles

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 offers homeowners a tax credit when they purchase reflective asphalt shingles. Homeowners can receive as much as a 30 percent tax credit on reflective shingles up to $1,500 through 2010.

To qualify for the rebate, the shingles must meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® requirements for initial and three-year solar reflectance. State and local agencies may offer additional incentives and rebates for installing energy-efficient roofing products. Visit North Carolina State University's Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency at www.dsireusa.org for offers in your state or local area.

The tax credit should be claimed on federal income-tax forms. Homeowners need to download and complete the Manufacturer's Certification document and keep it, along with all receipts or itemized bills from the contractor showing the amount spent on reflective shingles between Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2010. For more information about the ENERGY STAR requirements, visit www.energystar.gov.

Does anyone have data on shingle types and colors that qualify for this?
