IRE seeks volunteers for Community Service Day

The 2010 International Roofing Expo® (IRE) is seeking volunteers and donations for Community Service Day, a home renovation and revitalization project being held Feb. 21—the day before the IRE—in New Orleans. The IRE partnered with the New Orleans chapter of Rebuilding Together® to host the event.

Community Service Day will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in New Orleans' Hollygrove neighborhood. Volunteers will help renovate the home of Maggie Stephens, a 75-year-old retired secretary whose house was made unlivable by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"By participating in this rewarding day, attendees and exhibitors truly can make a difference in the life of Ms. Stephens," says IRE Director Donna Bellantone. "Displaced since 2005, she is ecstatic we are helping make her dream of returning home come true."

Skilled volunteers are needed from various construction disciplines to help with the renovations, which include roof repair, painting and flooring.

Monetary donations are needed, as well as products and materials such as shingles, flashing, plywood, drip edge, ridge caps and more. Manufacturers donating products and materials will be able to ship directly to the Rebuilding Together warehouse in New Orleans. Donations also will be accepted after the show from exhibitors who choose to provide their product displays.

"This is such a worthy cause to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate," says Bill Good, executive vice president of NRCA, the show's official sponsor. "This is a great opportunity to support the roofing industry while giving back to the New Orleans community."

Attendees and exhibitors will be able to register for this event and/or make a monetary donation when they register to attend the IRE. There is a $25 fee that includes lunch and transportation. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and will be asked to sign a waiver of liability form.
