Pay It Forward program completes first project
The Pay It Forward program was created by NRCA's Community Service Committee to match those in need in the roofing community with those who can help. The program recently completed its first project.
NRCA received a telephone call from Leonard Gray on behalf of three autistic women in Nutley, N.J., who were about to lose their home in a tax sale. Gray is a member of the Nutley Citizens Special Needs Committee, which formed in 2008 to financially rescue the three women. The committee arranged a fundraiser and successfully raised $40,000 to pay off the tax debt so the women could keep their home. Because they raised more money than needed for the tax debt, the leftover funds were to be used for repairs on the home, including a roof system replacement.
Gray contacted NRCA for help, explaining the need for 18 squares of roofing materials. NRCA contacted Vic Anthony, vice president of low-slope roofing systems for GAF Materials Corp., Wayne, N.J., who donated the shingles, and Bob Feury Jr., chief executive officer of Allied Building Products Corp., East Rutherford, N.J., who helped with materials delivery.
"You would be proud to know that their home now has the best roof on the street," Gray says. "NRCA, GAF Materials and Allied Building Products performed a wonderful community service by helping us assist these special-needs sisters. Remember that 'Community service is the dues that we pay to be members of the human race.'"
Seven companies have signed up to volunteer with the Pay It Forward program, including Architectural Metal Systems, Eufaula, Ala.; Hawaiian Built Roofing, Boise, Idaho; USA Roofing Systems & Exteriors LLC, Indianapolis; A-1 Roofing Services, Columbia, Md.; Blair Construction, Millersville, Md.; N.F. Mansuetto & Sons Inc., Martins Ferry, Ohio; and A. Poletto & Associates Inc., West Chester, Pa.
If you are willing to help someone in your community when the need arises, you can provide NRCA with your contact information so you can be included on the Pay It Forward list. Once your company is on the list, you will not be obligated to provide labor or materials but will receive project information when NRCA learns of someone in need in your area. In return for helping someone, you can ask them to help someone else in need.
For more information or to add your company's name to the Pay It Forward list, please contact Chrystine Hanus, NRCA's director of meeting services, at (847) 493-7522 or chanus@nrca.net.
