Message from MVP Task Force Chair Geoff Craft

Roofing contractors know when they have a great worker. They can see the productivity. The safety record is impressive. The "team" works just better as a whole. The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress has a special way to recognize Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award recipients. Each NRCA-member or nonmember roofing contractor may nominate up to three roofing field workers who hold a position no higher than superintendent.

How are the MVP award recipients selected? MVP judges are recognized professionals within the roofing industry, representing contractors, manufacturers and other industry suppliers. Each entry is examined for employees who have shown the following characteristics:
  • Active participation in community programs
  • A strong work ethic, outstanding workmanship in a roofing application and creative ideas for problem solving
  • An outstanding safety record and/or contribution to the improved safety of a work crew
  • The ability to attract new roofing workers and help retain existing ones
  • Support for co-workers and interest in helping others learn
  • Ongoing noteworthy contributions and activities that reflect positively on the individual personally and/or as an employee in the roofing industry
We select MVP winners in a number of categories and make sure their employers and co-workers know how much we value MVPs.

This year, there was more incentive for employers to submit entries. The program was taken a step further. One of the 10 MVP winners was chosen as Professional Roofing's Best of the Best. Professional Roofing and OMG Inc., Agawam, Mass., are co-sponsoring this elite recognition, which will include a special prize and feature article about the winning worker in Professional Roofing Workers. However, after much careful deliberation, the MVP Task Force felt there were two noteworthy candidates for two Best of the Best professionals were selected.

The Alliance sees its MVP initiative as a way to encourage workers to stick with the roofing industry. Too often, because of the pressure of bringing in the job on time and on budget, we don't take enough time to salute our workforce. The MVP program is one way we can show young men and women that we value their time and service to the roofing profession.
