Eligibility
Applicants to The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship
Program must be:
- Full-time employees of an NRCA contractor or supplier member company or their dependent
children* or spouses. Employees must have a minimum of one year of full-time employment
with their companies as of the application deadline date, and the company must have
been a member in good standing of NRCA for a minimum of one year as of the application
deadline date. Employees include principals of the member companies.
*Dependent children are defined as natural or legally adopted children, stepchildren
or grandchildren declared as tax deductions.
- High school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already
enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year
college, university or vocational-technical school.
One of the scholarships is sponsored by Firestone Building Products.
In addition
to the general requirements, applicants for this scholarship must be:
- Students who will study and/or have an interest in advancing environmental issues
in the construction/ roofing industry through new technologies such as recycling,
life cycle analysis, environmental product declarations, reflectivity, vegetative
roof systems and photovoltaics.
(Industrial/institutional and international members and relatives of current Alliance
board of trustees or officers are not eligible.)
Awards
Each recipient will receive a $5,000 award. Awards are renewable for up to three
years of undergraduate study or until a bachelor’s degree is earned provided recipients
renew annually and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).
Application
Interested students must complete the attached application and mail it with a current
complete official transcript to Scholarship Management Services postmarked no later
than Jan. 31. Online transcripts are acceptable if the applicant’s name, school
name, grades, credit hours earned for each course and term in which each course
was taken are printed.
Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information.
Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, questions must
be answered as completely as possible. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated.
All information received will be confidential.

Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record; potential to
succeed; leadership and participation in school and community activities; honors;
work experience; a statement of educational and career goals; and an outside appraisal.
Scholarship recipients will be considered solely based on merit, not need. Financial
need is not considered.
Final selection of recipients is made by the Alliance board of trustees. Named scholarship
donors may also provide input if they choose. All applicants agree to accept the
decision of the board of trustees as final.
All applicants will be notified of the board of trustees’ decision by May 1. Not
all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may renew
their scholarships for up to three years, provided they meet eligibility requirements.
At least one award will be granted from the roofing contractor community and at
least one from the roofing supplier community provided qualified applications are
received.
Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship Management Services processes Alliance scholarship payments on behalf
of the Alliance. Payment is made on Aug. 15. Checks are mailed to each recipient’s
home address. The checks are made payable to the school for the student.
Obligations
Students are required to supply Scholarship Management Services with complete transcripts
and notify Scholarship Management Services of any changes of address, school enrollment
or other relevant information.
Revisions
The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress reserves the right to review the conditions
and procedures of the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program and make changes
at any time, including termination of the program.
