The Big News

2006 brought several new initiatives for The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, and 2007 is expected to bring even more.

The big news was when the National Roofing Foundation's (NRF's) board of trustees and The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress' Steering Committee merged to form one board-the Alliance board of trustees.

NRF, a separate but related educational and research organization of NRCA, and The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, which was established within NRF to create a permanent endowment fund and provide guidance and direction for NRF, now will operate as The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress.

NRF will remain a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation but will do business as The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress. Scholarship funding for undergraduate students who are employees, immediate family of employees or immediate family of NRCA contractor members—which was previously sponsored by NRF—will continue through the Alliance.

The Alliance has established various objectives and goals for the future—one of which is to develop a balance between funding roofing-related projects and studies and those that are more philanthropic in nature. A committee was formed to establish a target ratio to balance philanthropic and award-giving research, education and publication grants and determine what giving opportunities exist and which programs are appropriate for the Alliance to fund.

The 2006-07 Alliance board of trustees are as follows:

Gary Wolfe, president
Wolfe Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Reading, Pa.

Robert (Bob) Bueche, vice president

Rebuilding Together 2007 Kickoff to Rebuild

For more than 10 years, NRCA has been a national sponsor of Rebuilding Together™, an organization that rehabilitates single-family homes for the elderly and needy. Each year, Rebuilding Together hosts Kickoff to Rebuild, an event held the Friday before the Super Bowl in the Super Bowl host city. In 2007, the Super Bowl will be held in Miami. NRCA recently announced that NRCA member Advanced Roofing, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has committed to be the title sponsor for the event. The Alliance has joined with NRCA; the Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association; and Bradco Supply to participate in the event. At the Oct. 21, 2006, meeting, Alliance members authorized a $10,000 contribution to participate as a sponsor at this event.

Gulf Area Work

The Alliance Gulf Area Pilot Program task force was formed to research worker training programs in the gulf regions that were devastated as a result of the hurricanes that swept through them in 2005.

After researching several training programs, the task force recommended the Alliance support the Gulf Rebuild, Education, Advancement and Training (GREAT) program, a partnership of business, government and community organizations spearheaded by the Business Roundtable. The program has a goal of training 20,000 new construction workers by 2009. To learn more about the GREAT program, visit www.imgreat.org.

At the Oct. 21, 2006, meeting, Alliance members authorized a contribution of up to $25,000 to the program. An initial payment of $12,500 was sent. The balance will be sent after a status report has been reviewed by task force members and they feel comfortable with the progress being made.

Inc., Garner, N.C. Not only will this committee be responsible for monitoring the performance of the endowment fund investments but also for developing and implementing immediate and long-term fundraising programs.

All Alliance members are encouraged to contact any member of the Finance and Financial Development Committee or Bennett Judson, executive director for the Alliance, with names of prospective firms. New Member

We bid a hearty welcome to Jim Giese, Jim Giese Commercial Roofing Inc., Dubuque, Iowa, and look forward to his participation and involvement. Alliance representation currently includes 86 contractors, 21 manufacturers, seven suppliers, three individuals and 28 associates for a total of 145 members.

Project Status

Ergonomics study—Since the October 2006 meeting progress report, site visits have been conducted to the offices and job sites of Alliance members Gooding, Simpson & Mackes Inc., Ephrata, Pa., and Enterprise Roofing Services Inc., Concord, Calif. Several additional visits are scheduled and should be concluded by the end of January. A draft of the study results is planned for review at the April Alliance meetings.

SpecRight—Classes to train roofing contractors to promote energy efficency and environment protection to the building owner and design community currently are up and running. As of the October meetings, approximately 130 people have been trained to date. Within three years, approximately 500 contractors will have been trained. NRCA currently is researching offering the courses online.

Other program developments include the following: EnergyWise should be up and running by March (Alliance funds enabled this to be done.); new software should be in place; other SpecRight components are being developed into an interactive, online format; SpecRight E-News, a monthly electronic newsletter, is being distributed (to subscribe go to www.specright.net); and the message is getting out to building owners and designers.

Roof Reflectivity—No status change since the October 2006 report-the scope of the study consists of procuring a D&S solar spectrum reflectomer and taking annual solar reflectivity readings on a minimum of 30 roofs in the metropolitan Chicago area over a five-year period.

The solar spectrum reflectomer has been received and the committee has begun performing some initial tests for the sake of becoming familiar with and calibrating the equipment. The committee also has been in contact with several Chicago area contractors, the Chicago Roofing Contractors Association and several manufacturers for the purpose of identifying specific buildings and roofs to be included in the study.

2006-07 Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards Program

As of the extended deadline of Dec. 15, 2006, 36 entries were received for the 2006-07 MVP Awards Program. The MVP Task Force met Jan. 8 to review entries and select winners for this year's program. The winners will be announced and formally recognized at the NRCA Member Luncheon March 7 during NRCA's 120th Annual Convention in Las Vegas. Winners receive round-trip airfare; two-night's hotel accommodations; a $100 American Express gift certificate; publicity in Professional Roofing magazine; press releases to industry trade publications, as well as local newspapers; and listing on the Alliance section of NRCA's Web site.

Alliance Scholarship Sweepstakes

The Alliance will be conducting a sweepstakes to generate funds for the scholarship program. The drawing for a Dodge RAM 2500 DH7 H42 4WD Quad Cab 160.5" SLT will take place at NRCA's final banquet March 7 in Las Vegas. (Winner does not need to be present to win.) Show your support of the scholarship program by buying a sweepstakes ticket for $100.
