The Roofing Alliance, celebrating 25 years as the foundation of NRCA, selected a team from Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., as the first-place winner of its seventh construction management student competition after hearing oral presentations from the finalist teams virtually April 8. Winners were announced during a virtual awards ceremony April 16.
Members of the winning team were Luke Skertich (team captain), Declan Fay, Allison O’Toole, Hannah Smith and Hendrix Smith (team alternate). Additionally, Allison O’Toole received the first-place award for Best Individual Student Presenter.
The team from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, placed second in the competition. Team members were Joshua Houser (team captain), Kendall Carter, Jacob Schneider, Mackenzie Voshage and Terry Copperman (team alternate). Additionally, Joshua Houser received the second-place award for Best Individual Student Presenter.
Four construction management schools were chosen as finalists to participate in the competition: Clemson University; Colorado State University; Texas A&M University, College Station; and University of Florida, Gainesville.
This year, the teams were tasked with submitting a qualified bid package for a new roof system on the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice facility, part of the new Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center in Henderson, Nev. Each team was required to research the project, review the plans and specifications, and assemble a full estimate and proposal to submit a qualified bid package.
The first-place team received a team trophy, a $5,000 L.B. Conway scholarship for its school and individual awards. The second-place team received a team trophy, a $2,500 Fred Good scholarship for its school and individual awards. The first-place Best Individual Student Presenter received a $300 gift card, and the second-place Best Individual Student Presenter received a $200 gift card.
