Construction jobs added in 39 states in March

Thirty-nine states added construction jobs from February to March, but construction employment is down in 35 states since March 2020, according to www.agc.org.

“Nonresidential contractors are coping with a depleted list of projects, extreme cost increases and unprecedented supply-chain problems,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. “These headwinds are likely to keep industry employment in many states below pre-pandemic levels for months.”

Texas added the most construction jobs from February to March—19,100—and Iowa had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—10.3%. Nevada lost the largest number of construction jobs (-1,300) and the highest percentage of construction jobs (-1.4%) for the month.

Fourteen states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from March 2020 to March. Utah added the most jobs—6,400—and Idaho had the largest percentage increase during that period—7%. Texas lost the most construction jobs from March 2020 to March (-35,400 jobs), and Wyoming had the largest percentage decline (-12.7%).

“Nicer weather and expanding confidence that the pandemic will soon end are helping improve market conditions,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, AGC’s CEO. “But the best way for policy makers to support continued job growth in the construction industry is to invest in infrastructure, remove government-imposed additions to materials prices and help get the country’s supply chain back in order.”
