Understanding the New Green Building Code

Professional Roofing

green; building code; IgCC; requirements

In March, the new International Green Construction Code, 2012 Edition (IgCC) was published after two years in development. This new model code is intended to serve as a basis for local jurisdictions wishing to adopt code requirements defining the sustainability of buildings and building sites. Because a building’s envelope, including its roof assembly, plays a large role in the building’s overall sustainability, IgCC includes a number of specific requirements applicable to roof assemblies. And some requirements are more stringent than what most roofing professionals are accustomed to seeing in other codes. An overview of IgCC and some of its roofing-related requirements follows.
