During NRCA's Industry Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception yesterday, numerous annual awards were presented.

The Charlie Raymond Award was presented to GAF, Parsippany, N.J. The award is given to the NRCA member who recruited the greatest number of new members during 2017.

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress presented its Most Valuable Player Awards to honor outstanding roofing workers. Following are the 2017-18 winners:

Alan Baird, foreman for Core Contractors Inc., Denver
Brian Goede, foreman for D.C. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Roman Graham, foreman for Baker Roofing Co., Wilmington, N.C.
Bryan Howard, superintendent for CentiMark Corp., Apex, N.C.
Douglas Woods, driver for OMG Inc., Agawam, Mass.

In addition, Professional Roofing's Best of the Best Award was presented to Alan Baird.

NRCA awarded the 71st Annual J.A. Piper Award, the roofing industry's most prestigious honor, to Rob McNamara. Bruce McCrory presented the award.

NRCA and CNA awarded the CNA/NRCA Community Involvement Award to Double D Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., York, Pa. Double D Roofing & Sheet Metal works with Shadowfax, an organization that provides services to mentally, emotionally and physically challenged individuals and finds them meaningful work. The CNA/NRCA Community Involvement Award honors charitable works by NRCA member contractors and awards the winning company's charity with $7,500. In addition, Action Roofing Hawaii LLC, Kapolei, Hawaii, was awarded second place and will receive $5,000 for Kahauiki Villages, a project that helps homeless families settle into long-term, affordable housing. O'LYN Roofing, Norwood, Mass., received third place and will receive $2,500 for The Home for Little Wanderers, whose mission is to ensure the healthy behavioral, emotional, social and educational development and physical well-being of at-risk children and families.

Finalists and winners of the Alliance's annual Gold Circle Awards were announced. Gold Circle Awards recognize NRCA members from throughout the world that make significant contributions to the roofing industry in various categories.

The Alliance's 2018 Gold Circle Awards finalists and winners are as follows:

Outstanding workmanship (Low-slope)

Winner:

  • Klein Contracting Corp., Doraville, Ga., for AT&T Midtown Center, Atlanta

Finalist:

  • Nations Roof LLC, Rowlett, Texas, for Tyson® Foods Vienna Processing Facility, Vienna, Ga.

Outstanding workmanship (Steep-slope)

Winner:

  • American Roofing & Metal Co. Inc., Louisville, Ky., and Steinrock Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Louisville, for Fayette County Courthouse, Lexington, Ky.

Honorable mention:

  • Flynn Southwest LP, Commerce City, Colo., for University of Denver's Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science

Finalists:

  • Charles F. Evans Co. Inc., Elmira, N.Y., for Bradford County Courthouse—Phase 1, Towanda, Pa.
  • Wagner Roofing Co., Hyattsville, Md., for Carter's Grove Plantation, Williamsburg, Va.

Innovative solutions (Reroofing)

Winner:

  • Wagner Roofing Co., Hyattsville, Md., for Bethesda Metro Center, Bethesda, Md.

Honorable mention:

  • American Roofing & Metal Co. Inc., Louisville, Ky., and Steinrock Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Louisville, for Fayette County Courthouse, Lexington, Ky.

Safety Preparedness and Performance

Winner:

  • Wagner Roofing Co., Hyattsville, Md., for Bethesda Metro Center, Bethesda, Md.

Finalists:

  • Charles F. Evans Co. Inc., Elmira, N.Y., for Bradford County Courthouse—Phase 1, Towanda, Pa.
  • Douglass Colony Group Inc., Commerce City, Colo., for Colorado State Capitol, Denver

Winners of the Alliance's 2018 Construction Management Student Competition also were announced. The seven teams in this year's competition were Auburn University, Auburn, Ala.; Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colo.; Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Ga.; Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge; Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Ala.; University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati; and University of Florida, Gainesville. The teams were asked to research this year's project, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans, review the plans and specifications, and assemble a full estimate and proposal to submit a qualified bid package. The teams submitted their written proposal; project bid; project schedule; project planning, equipment and methods; and materials that were used by Dec. 4, 2017. The oral presentations took place yesterday. The winning team is from Auburn University and will receive a $5,000 L.B. Conway scholarship for its school, a team trophy and individual awards.

NRCA also recognized Aaron Gross, Upstate Roofing & Painting Inc., Rochester, N.Y., and Benjamin Knox, Heidler Roofing Services Inc., Hagerstown, Md., for completing its ProForeman program. The program is designed to help roofing foremen shift their perspectives from being roof system installation managers to company leaders. NRCA congratulates this year's ProForemen!

Today's events include NRCA's For Foremen Only, Level 1, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. ROOFPAC silent auction item pickup will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at NRCA's booth, No. 1933.

Today, the 2018 International Roofing Expo® (IRE) registration will be available from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the exhibit hall will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. IRE's educational conference will be held from 7:45 to 11:15 a.m. There will be an IRE advisory board meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All IRE events will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
