Class description

For Foremen Only is a program focusing on communication, leadership and management skills for field managers. The roofing industry is filled with foremen and superintendents who are incredibly adept at expertly installing roof systems and who were promoted because of that expertise. Unfortunately, these individuals often do not possess equal levels of leadership, communication and management skills needed to effectively run their crews. This program introduces the concept that managing, leading and communicating are tools needed to be a truly successful middle manager. It also uses interactive exercises to practice using these new "tools" to become effective crew leaders.

After participating in this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify when to manage and when to lead
  • Identify positive and negative approaches to communication
  • Recognize their own communication styles
  • Improve their communication skills
  • Articulate specific ways to increase crew productivity
  • Increase their job management skills
  • Identify steps to improve their own leadership skills
  • Implement conflict resolution with employees in discipline situations
  • Translate learning to on-the-job situations

Tom joined NRCA in 1989. He graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., and holds a master's in business administration from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. He is recognized as an industry health and safety expert and represents NRCA at industry and nonindustry events. The U.S. secretary of labor appointed him to serve on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) Advisory Committee of Construction Safety and Health from 2007 to 2011. He is a sitting member of the National Occupational Research Agenda's Construction Sector Council, which sets the U.S. research agenda for construction safety and health. He also has served on the oversight committee for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH's) Prevention Through Design national initiative. Tom is active in regulatory actions affecting the roofing industry, working with officials from the Department of Transportation, OSHA and NIOSH. He also is known for his contributions to NRCA's Professional Roofing magazine and executive educational programming.

Amy Staska
NRCA's vice president of NRCA University

Amy has been with NRCA since August of 2011 and previously worked for the association from 1996 to 2004. Amy has worked in training and education her entire career, including at Awana Clubs International—a nondenominational children's and youth Christian ministry—and the University of New Hampshire.

At NRCA, Amy started her work in health and safety; her initial projects were helping to author NRCA's first Safety Manual and Toolbox Talks. As part of the education department, Amy has helped with the startup of the Future Executives Institute, shaping and teaching For Foremen Only, and implementing the growing ProForeman certificate program.

Amy's responsibilities include working with the education department and NRCA University committees to ensure all NRCA University offerings are well-developed, thorough and meet member needs.

Cancellation Policy

NRCA understands circumstances may arise that require you to cancel your registration. If you cancel up to 10 business days before an event, your registration fee will be refunded. If your cancellation is received 10 business days or less before an event, you may send another person in your place or receive a credit voucher that can be applied toward any NRCA University program during the next 12 months. Registrants who do not cancel before the seminar or do not attend are liable for the entire registration fee. All cancellations must be in writing. NRCA reserves the right to cancel any programs. If such a cancellation is necessary, registrants will be notified and an attempt will be made to reschedule or make alternative arrangements. Registrants will receive a full tuition refund for the program. NRCA is not responsible for other costs incurred. The registration fee is due and payable before the start of a seminar.
