The IRS is working on a new Form 1040 for the 2019 tax season.
The new Form 1040 will be half the previous size and will replace the current Form 1040, Form 1040A and Form 1040EZ. This will allow all 150 million taxpayers to use the same, simple form.
The form uses a "building block" approach. It can be supplemented with additional schedules if needed.
Because more than nine out of 10 taxpayers use software or a tax preparer, the IRS will work with the tax community over the summer to ensure a smooth transition.
