Clemson University team wins Roofing Alliance student competition

The Roofing Alliance selected a team from Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., as the first-place winner of its ninth construction management student competition after hearing oral presentations from the finalist teams March 8 during the 2023 International Roofing Expo® in Dallas. Winners were announced during NRCA’s Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception March 8 in Dallas.

Members of the winning team were Tristan Moseley (team captain), Jackson Davis, Murray Newell, Alaina Pruette and Allie Stark (team alternate).

The team from University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla., placed second in the competition. Team members were Jason Coil (team captain), Nick Hanson, Calissa Harris, Davis Lunger and Jonathan Villarreal (team alternate).

The team from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, placed third in the competition. Team members were Blake Bocchino (team captain), Josh Coker, Tamaryn Hughes, Alexia Palomares and Thomas De Lancey (team alternate).

Additionally, Dylan Smithwick from Colorado State University received the first-place award for Best Individual Student Presenter, and Adam Wascher from Bradley University received the second-place award for Best Individual Student Presenter.

Six teams participated in the competition: Bradley University, Peoria, Ill.; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Clemson University; Colorado State University, Fort Collins; Texas A&M University; and University of Florida, Gainesville.

This year, the teams were tasked with submitting a qualified bid package for a new roof system on Globe Life Field in Dallas. Each team was required to research the project, review the plans and specifications, and assemble a full estimate and proposal to submit a qualified bid package.

The first-place team received a team trophy, a $5,000 L.B. Conway scholarship for its school and individual awards. The second-place team received a team trophy, a $2,500 Fred Good scholarship for their school and individual awards. The third-place team received a team trophy, a $1,000 scholarship for their school and individual awards.

The first-place Best Individual Student Presenter received a $300 gift card, and the second-place Best Individual Student Presenter received a $200 gift card.

The Roofing Alliance’s 10th construction management student competition will be held Feb. 7, 2024, during the IRE in Las Vegas.
