Construction jobs added in 45 states and Washington, D.C., during past 12 months

Forty-five states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from August 2017 to August 2018, and 33 states added construction jobs from July to August, according to www.agc.org.

"Only three states experienced a decline in construction employment over the past year, the fewest number with a decrease since May 2015," says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). "These results show that contractors still expect to have plenty of work in the months ahead. The question many in the industry are asking is whether they will be able to find enough workers to keep pace with demand."

Texas added the most construction jobs—56,100—between August 2017 and August 2018. Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia and Michigan also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, New Hampshire added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Oregon and Michigan.

Twenty-nine states added construction jobs from July to August, with California adding the most construction jobs—5,200—followed by Florida and Washington. North Dakota added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month.

Three states lost construction jobs between August 2017 and August 2018. New Jersey lost the highest number of construction jobs—6,600—followed by Kentucky and Missouri. Construction employment fell in 15 states and Washington, D.C., from July to August, and Pennsylvania lost more than any other state—1,900.
