Construction jobs were added in 24 states from March to April

Twenty-four states added construction jobs in April, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-two states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.

“Construction employment continued to expand in many parts of the country, but uncertainties about the impacts of tariffs and the direction of the economy appear to be affecting hiring in many other places,” said Macrina Wilkins, AGC’s senior research analyst. “It is too early to tell, however, whether this is just a bump in the road or the start of a more troubling trend.”

California added the most construction jobs from March to April—6,300—and Virginia had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—1.9%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—32,000—and New Mexico had the largest percentage increase—14.6%.

Washington lost the largest number of construction jobs (-3,300) for the month and Alaska had the largest percentage decline (-3.1%). During the past 12 months, Washington lost the most construction jobs (-15,000) and Washington had the largest percentage decline (-6.6%).
