Construction jobs were added in 32 states in July amid labor shortages

Thirty-two states added construction jobs in July, and construction employment is up in 33 states since February 2020, according to www.agc.org.

California added the most construction jobs from June to July—11,400—and North Dakota had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—3.7%. New York lost the largest number of construction jobs (-2,000) for the month and Washington, D.C., had the largest percentage decline (-3.2%).

Thirty-three states added construction jobs from February 2020 to July. Florida added the most jobs—18,200—and Utah had the largest percentage increase during that period—13.9%. New York lost the most construction jobs since February 2020 (-38,800 jobs) and had the largest percentage decline (-9.5%).

“Although demand for projects is strong, there are too many states where contractors can’t find enough workers,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist for Associated General Contractors of America. “The high level of openings and low unemployment rate among experienced construction workers shows the industry needs more workers.”
