Construction jobs were added in 36 states from February to March

Thirty-six states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs in March as contractors continued to face worker shortages, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-nine states added construction jobs during the past year.

“Most states have experienced no letup in demand for construction projects, as these numbers reveal,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “In fact, even more states would have posted an increase in construction employment if contractors could find enough qualified workers.”

New York added the most construction jobs from February to March—9,500—and had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—2.5%. During the past 12 months, California added the most construction jobs—33,900—and Alaska had the largest percentage increase—16.2%.

Oregon lost the largest number of construction jobs (-2,300) for the month and had the largest percentage decline (-2%). During the past 12 months, New York lost the most construction jobs (-9,700) and Washington had the largest percentage decline (-3.6%).
