Construction starts increased in June

Dodge Data & Analytics, New York, has reported construction starts rose 16% in June after rising 13% in May.

Nonresidential building construction jumped 39% in June as manufacturing starts soared 304% and commercial starts surged 78%. Institutional starts were unchanged.

Residential building construction fell 1% in June after rising 2% in May. Single-family housing fell 2%, and multifamily starts were unchanged.

Nonbuilding construction rose 2% in June.

For the 12 months ending June, total construction starts were up 4% compared with the 12 months ending June 2024. Nonbuilding construction rose 3%; nonresidential building climbed 8%; and residential building fell 1%.

“Construction starts saw solid growth in June, alongside particular strength in manufacturing and data center construction,” said Sarah Martin, associate director of forecasting at Dodge Construction Network. “However, risks remain elevated that construction starts will be more subdued in the back half of the year—alongside ongoing uncertainty over trade policy and the broader economy.”
