National Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of U.S. citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
According to census.gov, Sept. 15 marks the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
As of July 1, 2021, the Latino population in the U.S. is 62.6 million—18.9% of the total population—and 13 states have a population of 1 million or more Latino residents.
Latino construction workers are valued contributors to the industry and its success. The latest labor force statistics from the 2021 Current Population Survey show Latinos make up 31.5% of the construction workforce.
During National Hispanic Heritage Month—and throughout the year—employers are encouraged to find ways to celebrate their Spanish-speaking employees and their cultures.
