In recognition of National Preparedness Month, which occurs each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for unpredictable disasters and emergencies, the IRS is urging individuals and businesses to update and secure their records to prepare now for natural disasters.
The IRS highlights the importance of securing and duplicating essential tax and financial documents; creating lists of property; and knowing where to find information when a disaster occurs. After a disaster, having updated documents and other information readily available can help victims apply for the relief available from the IRS and other agencies and recover financially from a disaster.
