This Week in D.C.

Save the Date: Roofing Day in D.C. is April 6-7, 2027

Mark your calendars for Roofing Day in D.C. 2027, which is set for April 6-7 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, a new host hotel for the event. Join colleagues from all sectors of the roofing industry, including contractors, distributors, manufacturers and other professionals from throughout the U.S. as we come together to make our voices heard by lawmakers in Congress. This will be a critical time as the newly elected 120th Congress will be gearing up to consider several key legislative issues important to the roofing industry.

Roofing Day in D.C. is the roofing industry’s premier advocacy event and a great opportunity to build relationships with policymakers, share the challenges and priorities facing our industry, and help shape policies that support roofing businesses and the industry’s workforce. More details—including featured speakers, registration and other event information—will be announced soon. View more information and photos from past events.

NRCA engages with Congressman Smucker in Pennsylvania

On Oct. 22, John Yuko, president of NRCA member GSM Roofing, Ephrata, Pa., and Duane Musser, NRCA vice president of government relations, participated in a roundtable discussion with Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa,) in York, Pa. Smucker convened the event in collaboration with the America Business Immigration Coalition and other business representatives to discuss the need for Congress to pass immigration reform, which addresses the growing workforce needs of roofing and other industries.

The NRCA representatives thanked the congressman for his exceptionally strong leadership in the House regarding workforce issues. Smucker is the prime sponsor of the Essential Workers for Economic Advancement Act (H.R. 5494), bipartisan legislation to reform federal visa programs to address industry workforce needs. He also is a co-sponsor of the Dignity Act (H.R. 4393), bipartisan legislation to strengthen border security, stabilize the roofing industry’s workforce, expand resources for workforce training and implement other critical reforms to our immigration system. NRCA appreciates the opportunity to participate in this local event to help generate more support for these critical initiatives important to the roofing industry.

President Trump modifies tariffs on Canadian imports

On Oct. 23, President Trump issued a proclamation that modifies some Canadian products subject to 50% tariffs under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 that were originally authorized July 20. Under this proclamation, these tariffs no longer will apply to the following Canadian imported products: plywood sheets, some paper products, certain machinery and refrigeration equipment, and certain crates and boxes. The proclamation also authorizes the tariffs to apply to Canadian imports of certain valves, sealants, coatings, adhesives and other products. Qualifying United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement origin does not, by itself, exempt any covered product from these Section 338 tariffs. These modifications will take effect Oct. 30. View a White House Fact Sheet with more information regarding the proclamation.
