Abstract
In order to make lasting progress towards sustainable communities, our buildings need to become regenerative in nature, not only providing shelter from the elements, but also clean air, water, biodiversity, healthy food and renewable energy. This, unlike many challenges associated with sustainable development, is achievable in a generation! Green roof infrastructure is a key element of sustainable building technology and provides numerous public and private benefits across environmental, economic and social spheres. While green roof infrastructure development in North America remains a slow but steady process, Germany has witnessed a rapid expansion of its market spurned on by public incentive programs and policies. In order to establish effective green roof policies and incentives in North America, governments need to undertake a market research and development process to determine how best to maximize on the benefits of green roofs for their community. This typically involves a combination of education and awareness building, technical research on green roof performance and policy and program formulation. Just as no two green roofs are identical, so too the benefits of green roof infrastructure investment will vary from community to community.
