Abstract
The National Slate Association published this design manual to further one of its core missions—to disseminate information bout, and provide education materials for, the slate roofing industry. Slate is a long-lived natural material. For it to function as a durable, aesthetically pleasing and weathertight roofing material, it must be installed properly. The purpose of this design manual is to assist design professional and roofing contractors with the design, specification and installation of slate roof systems that will meet these goals. Users of this manual should keep in mind that the information contained herein is intended as a general guide, representative of various industry practices, and is not professional advice specific to any given application. Uses of this manual must rely on their own judgment, or that of knowledgeable roofing professionals, to determine which materials and methods are appropriate for their purposes, whether or not those material and methods are a part of this publication.
