Abstract
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum's 2,400 S.F. green roof demonstration garden displays a wide range of green roof technology. The display presents visitors with a green roof demonstration garden that reveals a diversity of green roof systems. The demonstration garden features four progressively thicker green roof systems including wetland, extensive, semiintensive, and intensive systems. The demonstration garden is a retrofit project that is integrated into the existing vernacular of the modern building. Structurally, the roof supports an additional 40-90 pounds per square foot. This means the roof can support a six to eighteen inch thick green roof profile, and a diversity of vegetation that corresponds to the various profiles. The demonstration garden provides a great format for research and education for the Nature Museum that includes demonstration of the design process and the evolution of the garden over time.
