Abstract
This report presents fundamental and practical aspects of moedern wind engineering practice as it relates to structural design. The first chapter includes information on the wind environment. Differences among various types of storms are noted that are of interest in extreme wind climate studies. Elements of engineering micrometeorology included int he chapter consist of descriptions of mean wind profiles for varoius types of terrain, and of the turbulence structure in the atmosphere. Elements of extreme wind climatology are presented for regions dominated by extratropical storms, hurricane-prone regions, and tornado-prone regions. Information is provided on estimates of extreme winds from short records. The second chapter review notions of aerodynamics, structural dynamics, aeroelasticity, and wind tunnel testing. The remainder of the book provides information pertaining to low building, tall buildings, slender towers with circular cross-section, hyperbolic cooling towers and bridges. References are included to numerous primary sources and to pertinent standards and textbooks.
