Abstract
Since vegetative roof systems, sometimes referred to as "green roof systems," serve the function of buildings' roof systems, they need to comply with the same general requirements of the building code as conventional roof systems. This paper provides a general overview of the code requirements applicable to roof systems, including vegetative roof systems, based upon the International Building Code, 2009 Edition. Also included int his paper is a discussion of the code's alternative materials, design, and methods provision, which currently appears to be the most logical means for the vegetative roof systems industry to provide for compliance with the building codes' requirements.
