Abstract
The technique of green roofs has been used in Germany since the beginning of the 20th Century. Experiences on green roof research have existed for more than four decades. Plant survival under the condition of limited water supply and extreme climatic factors like higher wind load are tasks ecologists investigate primarily. The author has been involved in green roof research for two decades. This publication is focused on aspects of the biodiversity of two selected green roofs. Both green roofs were established in the early 1980s in the Center of Berlin. The main aspects of plant growth will be discussed under the conditions of limited water supply as a key factor of plant growth. First steps to a model of plant growth will be discussed.
